Why working days matter

Knowing the exact number of working days in a month is essential for payroll, project planning, freelance invoicing, and HR leave calculations. Unlike a simple calendar count, this tool removes weekends and all official bank and public holidays for your specific country and region — giving you the true number of days your business is operating.

Bank holidays vary significantly not just between countries but between regions. Scotland has different public holidays to England and Wales, and Australian states each observe different days. Select your region to get an accurate count.

UK bank holidays by region

The UK has three separate public holiday schedules:

Region	Notable differences
England & Wales	8 bank holidays per year. Includes Good Friday and Boxing Day.
Scotland	9 bank holidays. New Year's Day observed over 2 days (1–2 Jan). No Good Friday as a bank holiday.
Northern Ireland	10 bank holidays. Includes St Patrick's Day (17 Mar) and Battle of the Boyne (12 Jul).

How to use the 6-month chart

After calculating, a bar chart appears showing the selected month plus the following five months. Blue bars show working days; purple bars show weekend days. The chart gives a quick visual of how the working calendar varies across the period — useful for spotting lighter months, planning sprint capacity, or comparing billing periods at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a working day?

By default, a working day is any Monday to Friday that is not a bank or public holiday in your selected country or region. You can customise your working week using the Custom option to include or exclude any day.

Are bank holidays included in the working day count?

No. Bank and public holidays that fall on a working day are subtracted from the working day total. If a bank holiday falls on a weekend, it is not double-counted.

Why are UK regions listed separately?

Scotland, England & Wales, and Northern Ireland each have different public holiday schedules. Selecting your specific region ensures your count is accurate for payroll and HR purposes.

How far ahead can I calculate?

Bank holiday data is sourced from the Nager Date public holidays API, which publishes official data for most countries several years in advance.

What if my country isn't listed?

The tool covers the most commonly searched countries. If yours is not listed, the count will default to weekdays only without deducting public holidays.

How does a custom working week work?

Select "Custom" under Working Week to choose exactly which days of the week count as working days. This is useful for part-time schedules, Sunday-to-Thursday working weeks, or businesses that operate on weekends.
